FGM/C

female genital mutilation/cutting

FGM/C stands for "female genital mutilation/cutting". This ritual involves parts of or the entire external female genital organ being removed or injured. FGM/C is also known as female circumcision.

Below, you can find out what the consequences of FGM/C are and how victims are supported.

There are different forms of FGM/C. The external genital organs of a girl are partially or completely cut away. This can include the clitoris, the labia minora and the labia majora.

What health problems does FGM/C cause?

  • immediately afterwards: blood poisoning and infections that can be fatal
  • frequent urinary tract infections
  • permanent inflammation or pain, especially during menstruation or sexual intercourse
  • infertility or birth complications
  • anxiety and depression

Parents are responsible for taking care of their children's health. It has been proven that FGM/C causes serious damage to the child. The damage is not just physical. FGM/C causes psychological damage that will often never heal. Protect your children from this ritual.

Is FGM/C allowed in Austria?

As in many other countries, FGM/C is prohibited by law in Austria. It is considered a serious violation of human rights and bodily harm. However, victims need not always anticipate legal consequences. In some cases, parents can be punished for circumcising their daughters. Circumcision abroad can also be punished in Austria.
