Stressful experiences around childbirth

Childbirth is associated with many expectations and fears and is usually very challenging. Some mothers and fathers have additional negative and stressful experiences. There are many different reasons for this. Negative experiences during childbirth increase the risk of mental stress after giving birth. In addition to good preparation for childbirth, it is therefore also important to address stressful experiences and seek support.

Right to information and self-determination

In Austria, women can choose where they give birth. You can find an overview of the different options in our guide. Regardless of experiences during childbirth, parents have the right to information and self-determination. Therefore, please do not hesitate to ask for information. Various people are responsible for this in the hospital. Inquire about who you can contact with which concern.

Situations may arise during childbirth that require quick action. These can be different forms of birth complications. But even in acute situations, parents have the right to information and self-determination.

Negative experiences during childbirth

For many mothers, childbirth is an emotionally stressful experience, even without complications. Women affected by this report significant anxiety or loss of control. Many feel that they are not noticed or taken seriously by specialists while giving birth or that they are overwhelmed by the events.

Regardless of emergency situations, women should always have the opportunity to be well informed and make decisions. Otherwise, they may come away with a negative experience of childbirth.

VRANNI method

The VRANNI method, named after the German acronym, helps expectant parents to question a tool, decisions and measures during childbirth:

V = Advantages = What are the advantages of applying the proposed measure?

R = Risks = What are the risks?

A = Alternatives = Are there alternatives? Which?

N = Emergency = Is it an emergency?

N = Doing nothing = What happens if nothing is done?

I = Intuition = What does the expectant parents' gut feeling tell them?

Consequences of negative experiences during childbirth

Possible consequences of negative birth experiences can be self-esteem disorders, self-doubt, loss of confidence in one's own body or postpartum depression. Negative experiences during childbirth can even be perceived as experiences of violence and trigger mental stress. All of this can have a negative impact on the ability to bond and the parent-child relationship or on the baby.

Reports of negative birth experiences must always be taken seriously. It is important to talk about these experiences and your own perceptions and to give feedback in writing. This can often take place in hospitals, such as in conversation with the midwife, the doctor or other involved parties on site. However, sometimes it takes some time for women to reflect on and realise their experiences.

Support in the event of negative experiences during childbirth

You can talk anonymously and confidentially about your negative experiences with an expert via the Schwierige Geburt (Difficult Childbirth) helpline. A midwife, family counsellor or psychotherapist will support you with further steps or provide you with support options. Participating in a group for childbirth preparation can be useful for both parents. The offer from Frühe Hilfen (Early Intervention) can also provide support or help in seeking these out.
